How to choose the right vinyl for vehicle wrapping
Cast vs. calendered, matte or gloss lamination, 3M and Avery warranties, a practical guide for the right decision.
A vehicle wrap starts with the material. The wrong film means bubbles, lifting edges and colour that fades within six months. The right choice depends on body shape, expected lifetime and budget.
Cast vs. calendered
Cast films are thin, elastic and last 7 to 12 years, ideal for full wraps and complex surfaces. Calendered films are thicker and cheaper, a good fit for flat graphics on vans.
- Cast: 50 microns, low memory, conforms to deep curves.
- Calendered: 70 to 100 microns, tends to shrink back, best on flat panels.
- Full fleet wraps: cast film, no compromise.

Lamination is not optional
Lamination protects against UV, automated car washes and scratches. Matte for a premium look, gloss for vibrant colour, satin for balance.
Choosing the finish
- 1Gloss: maximum contrast, ideal for photography and saturated colour.
- 2Matte: elegant, hides panel imperfections, shows dirt more easily.
- 3Satin: the safest compromise for mixed fleets.
A premium film applied badly looks worse than a cheap film installed properly.
Real warranties
3M IJ180 and Avery MPI 1105 come with warranties of 7 years and more, but only when applied by a certified installer. Always ask for the datasheet and the batch number.
