Paper and board weights: what to choose for each product

From 80 gsm for documents to 350 gsm for business cards, with the finishes that change perception.

Weight is expressed in grams per square metre and shows how much a one square metre sheet weighs. It is not the same as thickness, because a bulky paper can be thicker than a coated one at the same weight, but in practice weight remains the simplest reference.

80 to 100 gsmdocuments, letterheads, notepadsoffice paper, thin

300 to 350 gsmbusiness cards, invitations, tagsboard, feels good in the hand
over 400 gsmspecial business cards, packagingduplexed or mounted board

Finishes that change perception

  • Gloss: vivid colours and strong contrast, but fingerprints show.
  • Matt: elegant and easy to read, you can write on it without smudging.
  • Soft-touch: velvety feel, used on premium business cards.
  • Metallic foil: gold or silver accents on the logo, very visible in light.
  • Spot UV: gloss on selected areas only, contrasting with a matt background.

Uncoated and recycled papers

Uncoated papers absorb more ink, so colours come out warmer and less saturated. They suit brands that want a natural look, menus and packaging. Always ask for a sample before the full run.
